Presentation

Welcome to ESEC!

ESEC is a centre for the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture and humanistic, artistic, scientific, technological and pedagogical knowledge.

It offers undergraduate and masters’ degrees in the fields of education, communication and sport, with a strong emphasis on the training and professional integration of its students. Aware of the importance of lifelong learning, ESEC has also invested in continuous, specialised training and refresher courses for professionals working within the scientific areas covered by the institution.

It promotes research and the transfer of knowledge within the sciences of education, communication sciences, arts, humanities and sport, and it collaborates with public and private entities both in terms of training and research and development.

ESEC is highly committed to valuing the various aspects of its sphere of intervention, in a multi-systemic way, without losing sight of its specificity as a training institution.

The institution holds close ties with the regional community, but at the same time has invested in the international dimension of its teaching and research, by providing its students and teachers with opportunities to access exchange programmes abroad, or by participating in projects with higher education institutions in other countries.

With the objective of greater interaction with the academic community, as well as with the local community, ESEC frequently organises and promotes various meetings, seminars and conferences within its scientific and pedagogical domains.

Originally called Escola Superior de Educação, the institution emerged on 26 December 1979 as an organic unit of the Polytechnic Institute of Faro with the aim of training and promoting the continuous training of early childhood educators and Year 1-6 teachers. It started to function in full from 1984.

Subsequently, in an attempt to respond to the concerns of the community and seeking to optimise their human and material resources, in the early nineties, courses in Communication Sciences, Translation, and Communication Design were created. In 1998, Complementary Training courses for Teachers with a Bachelor's Degree were created.

In 2008, in light of the reorganisation of higher education institutions in Portugal, ESEC adopted its current name and, in addition to restructuring its degrees, it began offering Master's courses in Pre-School Education, Basic Education, Social Education, Special Education and Social Gerontology, hoping to soon expand this list to its other spheres of activity.
